Description: |
The CPR Pedestrian Bridge is located adjacent to downtown Red Deer and consists of a two-span steel through truss and 10-span timber trestle system with a combined length of approximately 155 meters. It was originally constructed in 1908 by the Canadian Pacific Rail (CPR) company to service their Calgary to Edmonton rail line. This structure served CPR until 1990 when the rail line was relocated out of downtown to the west of the city. At the same time the bridge was donated by CPR to the City and was repurposed for use as a pedestrian crossing. To maintain use of the structure over the next 75 years and improve user functionality, a major rehabilitation of the steel trusses, replacement of the concrete substructure, and replacement of the timber trestle is proposed. In addition, public realm improvements are proposed adjacent to the bridge. |
